The senior-laden Defenders made good on a golden opportunity on a sunny day in Tallahassee, Fla., on Friday with all five scoring runners finishing in the top 45 for coach  Dordt's balance enabled it to overcome No. 1-ranked (by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) Milligan (Tenn.) by 18 points despite Milligan having the fourth- and eighth-fastest runners across the finish line. The Defenders, winning the first NAIA title in any sport in school history, lead off this edition of the f the best performances by Iowa-based collegiate and postcollegiate distance runners and triathletes.

The Defenders were paced by senior All-American and former Central Lyon/GLR prep  13th-place finish in the 8K race at Apalachee Regional Park. Anderson was the first of four Defenders to break 25 minutes and average under 5 minutes a mile by running 24:28.5. Anderson led the Defenders in their final four meets, winning the Great Plains Athletic Conference title along the way, and earned All-American honors for the first time. Anderson improved his finish at nationals by 44 positions.

Davis Tebben was the second Dordt runner to cross the finish line, doing so in 17th place and establishing a personal-best time of 24:35. That time is :03 better than his past best. The previous best nationals finish for Tebben, also a former GPAC champion from Lansing, Mich., had been 49th last year.

, a senior academically, provided a huge spark for the Defenders by running a new best of 24:36.6, 18 seconds faster than his time on Dordt's flat course earlier this year. Shippy is a former Sioux Center High athlete who moved up 68 spots throuwas the fourth Defender across the line in 23rd place to become a two-time All-American and improve on a 34th-place effort from a year ago. The native of Lynden, Wash., ran 24:40.9.

Junior Ethan Summerhays moved up 29 spots from a year ago to place 45th and secure the Defenders' team title. Summerhays, from Brantford, Ontario, ran 25:00.2.

The final two Defenders were sophomore Aidan Vorster, 50th in a new best time of 25:02, and senior Trey Engen, a former Algona High prep. Vorster moved up 56 spots after 1.2 kilometers in his national championship debut. He is from Chino
