 A record-breaking number of women ran for office during midterm elections in 2018. But this election cycle, women are making history not just by running in numbers but because of who they are running against: other women.

Both major parties this year nominated women for governor in five states: Alabama, Arizona, Iowa, Meems that finally, both parties have realized that women candidates are successful when women run for office and that they are just as capable of winning as men,” says Amanda Hunter, the executive director of a nonpartisan organization that has researched every gubernatorial race involving women candidates since 1998.

This year’s gubernatorial races also have historic numbers of female candidates overall. A record 25 women are running for governor across 20 states. The previous high was 16 female gubernatorial candidates in 2018. Currently,erve as governor and held the office, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

Three states could see a female governor and female lieutenant governor for the first time. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Leslie Rutledge are the  Democrat s running for governor with Kim Driscoll as her prospective lieutenant governor, and in  Nan Whaley and Cheryl Stephens are running on the Democratic ticket.

Hunter says she’s pleased to see so many women on the ballot. But when it comes to races with exclusively female candidates, she says competitors face unique challenges.

“Voters are no longer surprised to see women run for office as a major party candidate, which is a shift from five years ago,” she says. “But they are still surprised to see two women running against each other.”

Prior to this year’s gubernatorial races, people believed that two women running against each other would cancel out much of the gender bias faced by female politicians, Hunter says. This election cycle, however, researchers from the foundation have found that the opposite is true.
